NHC at the frontline of primary healthcare!

Operating across the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, we are so proud of our national reputation for best practice clinical services. Our people are united by their desire to make a difference, one step at a time. And over time, those steps can achieve amazing things. Here are three examples.

  1. Antenatal care

We recognise that good health starts before we’re born and as a result we have made quality antenatal care a priority. Over the past 20 years we have focused more and more on the care for mothers during pregnancy. We measure the success of our antenatal program based on the number of antenatal visits in the first trimester, and we’re currently at 70%, well above the industry average. This has seen the average birth weight of babies in the APY lands increase and subsequently the percentage of low birth weight decrease.

  1. Immunisation rates

It’s important to recognise the journey doesn’t end there and there are ongoing national challenges around child immunisation. Nganampa Health Council puts a real focus on this, and our immunisation rates are as high as anywhere in the country; they are regularly at 100% for residents. This extremely high childhood immunisation coverage means disease can be prevented from developing and spreading.

2014/15 2015/16 2016/17
Fully Immunised 143 149 140
Not Fully Immunised 0 0 1
Percentage 100% 100% 99.3%

  1. STIs

The sexual health program at Nganampa Health Council has been a huge success in reducing the rate of sexually transmitted infections within the area. The central focus is an annual six week screen that drives participation from over 70% of the target population which has seen some spectacular reductions in the rates of STIs.

These milestones and large scale improvements really matter but our people are achieving so many other things, every day. Their professionalism, care and commitment makes such a big difference to the lives of so many. Thank you to all our current and past employees for all that you do!

  1. This sounds like such a great initiative for the young people of our land. Very proud of the work that is being done with this programme.
