Dr Robert Irving (Dr Bob) was awarded a Commendation Award for the South Australian Citizen of the Year 2018. He spends almost half of each year travelling to outback Aboriginal communities in the Anangu–Pitjantjatjara-Yankunyjatjara lands in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory treating sick animals, mostly dogs.
Joining Nganampa Health in 1996, Dr Bob has been our resident veterinary surgeon across the APY Lands for 22 years. His work has had an outstanding impact on the health of our communities through the NHC Dog Health Program. This program was implemented to reduce the risk of transmission of diseases from dogs to human and to control the population of dogs within these communities.
Over a 10 year period from 2003 to 2013, he administered almost 18,000 doses of the parasitic control agent, over 3000 doses of the fertility drug and humanely put down close to 3,000 dogs. This program has reduced the risk to children and adults contracting skin infection, diseases and chronic gut conditions.
We are proud to work with Dr Bob at NHC as he is a great role model and advocate for providing professional veterinary services and keeping our communities healthy. Congratulations Dr Bob!
